Alexander "Sandy" Archibald was another to escaped from the horror of the colliery row through football and, like Tommy Muirhead from neighbouring Cowdenbeath, at Ibrox. He was born in Crossgates in Fife, the son of parents from Clackmannanshire, his father a miner. And he too would start down the pit so be in a reserved occupation, which allowed him, an outside-right, to start his football during The Great War locally at Crossgates Mayflower and Dunfermline Juniors, before in 1916 at twenty joining Raith Rovers. But he was to be at Stark's Park for just over a season before Rangers came in, putting him straight into the first-team, where over seventeen campaigns he would make over five hundred starts, score a goal every four games, win thirteen Leagues, three Cups and eight caps.
Moreover, once his playing days were over in 1935, with a season as player-manager back at Raith he took to management simple with four more years there and then seven at Dunfermline, including the the war years when he also worked at the Rosyth Dockyard. And he did it having married in 1925, his wife Margaret Wilson, who had also lived on Dunfermline Road in Crossgates, the couple settling in Glasgow's Corkerhill.
With her he would have two children, twins, a boy and girl, but with their daughter dying in 1933 at just eight of scarlet fever to be buried locally at Craigton Cemetery. And it may have been that loss that prompted the family to take itself home to Fife. It would have made complete sense in terms of both Raith and Dunfermline. Certainly it would be back in Crossgates, said to be because of overwork and at just fifty, that in 1946 Archie would collapse and die.
He would be buried in Dunfermline Cemetery to be joined in time by their son on his early death in 1971and four decades later in 1984 by Margaret. Her passing would be at West Fife Hospital at the age of eighty-one.
