In contrast to many of the mining families around the end of the 19th Century the McCloy's stayed put on the one terrace in Uddingston for all of Phil's childhood and youth. He was the son of an Irish-born father and a mother from Glasgow and at fifteen may well have been down the pit already. Certainly during The Great War he was cutting coal.
And it was during those war years that he learned his football as a fullback with local and then more distant junior clubs, finally with Parkhead before in 1918 at twenty-two being signed by Ayr United. It led to a seven year stay and two caps in 1924 and 1925, his club then being relegated and he moving South. He went to Manchester City, with the club reaching the FA Cup in his first season, then he experiencing relegation once more but with re-promoted in 1928.
He would stay with City for five years until 1930. By then he was already thirty-four but clearly wanted or needed to keep playing. He joined Chester so a season, perhaps to play alongside former international colleague, Dave Morris, and then went on a bit of a tour of the two professional leagues that were emerging at the time, at Cork in Ireland and Rennes in France, and had a couple of trials in the lower leagues in England before returning to Scotland.
In fact he seems to have played on until forty because in 1937 he was still recorded as a professional footballer, club unknown, on marrying Ellen Bannon, with the wedding by Paisley in Linwood, her hometown, but the two of them settling officially in Bellshill but actually in Bothwell, a stone's throw from his Uddingston roots.
The couple would have one daughter, he now working as a joiner's mate. And it would be as just that, retired, that he would be recorded on his death in 1971, aged seventy-five. He would be buried in Craigton Cemetery joined, when she passed away in 1979, aged seventy-nine and in Bellshill, by Ellen and later by their daughter.
