There were, of course, two Scottish Patsy Gallachers, born eight years apart. The one, mainly of Celtic, who was never able to represent the country of almost his whole life and where he learned the game because he was born in Co. Donegal and moved with his family to Scotland when he was three. The other, the younger, born in 1909 and raised entirely in Renfrewshire in Bridge of Weir of equally Irish parents would begin the game locally before just after he turned nineteen being signed by Sunderland. And it was there, an inside-forward, that he would spend the next decade culminating in 1937 with a League win and the following year the Cup. Moreover, he was capped once, in 1934, and it should have been more, the Wearside club one at the forefront from 1931 of not releasing non-English players for international duty.
Then after Sunderland there was a brief period with Stoke before war broke out, he serving as a PT instructor in the RAF. By that time he had been married, in Sunderland in 1933, to Catherine Gorman and they had had at least one, probably two children. And even when war ended he, aged thirty-six continue to try to play at a lower level for a couple a seasons before a return to Renfrewshire, first to Bridge of Weir and then to Greenock, where in 1992 he passed away aged eighty-two to be laid to rest in Kilbarchan Cemetery, close to his place of birth.
