Robert "Bobby" Templeton

Although in the main associated with Kilmarnock Robert Templeton was born in 1880 nearby but in Coylton, his father a coal miner. But curiously a decade later, the father still cutting coal, was staying in an inn, The Eagle, in Irvine. Perhaps they were there temporarily but it makes it difficult to know if young Bobby learned the game in the former, the latter or in Kilmarnock itself, where they eventually settled.

Certainly he started his career with Kilmarnock club, Roslin, before a season in the Killy junior side, Rugby, and trials as a gifted winger elsewhere in Scotland before in 1898 at eighteen being signed South by Aston Villa.

He was to stay with the Birmingham club for five seasons, a settled part of his career, actually not make that many appearances, just sixty-four, but in 1900 win the League. That is before moving on for a season and a bit at Newcastle before two at Arsenal, at which point it was back to Scotland, for a season at Celtic, winning both the League and the Cup, and finally, aged just twenty-seven and seemingly at his peak, apart for a 1913-15 swansong at Fulham that is, six good seasons back at Kilmarnock proper and Rugby Park, where he would rack up well over one hundred and fifty starts.

The problem seems to have been with Templeton his inconsistency, hence club frustration perhaps. But because of his sheer talent he also, nevertheless, would between 1902 and 1912 win eleven caps, six of them against England. That is before before finally hanging up his boots at thirty-five in 1915 and running full-time the Royal Hotel that had part-owned since 1909. He then married, in Kilmarnock still, in 1916, his bride, Sarah McCourt, ten years older than he and the daughter of another publican and in 1919, aged not quite forty, simply dropped dead of a heart-attack. He is buried in Kilmarnock's Kaimshill Cemetery, survived by Sarah for thirty two years. She would pass away in 1951 at the age of eighty-one and be laid beside him.
